AR Porn: How It Works

While the industry of VR porn is booming, AR-enhanced adult entertainment is just taking off. In 2018, ARPorn.com released a product of its partnership with BaDoinkVR – an augmented reality demo featuring a real person. Previously, AR environments only included digitally generated characters, so the novelty is a step forward.

You may be wondering about the differences between VR and AR worlds. Here is a basic explanation:

  • In VR videos, you are immersed in a fully virtual environment, and you may explore it with the help of VR headsets and haptic devices.
  • In AR, virtual elements are overlaid on top of the actual reality, so the end product is a combination of both. Hence the term augmented reality. The Pokemon Go app is a good example of this synthesis.

Both VR and AR can deliver the multisensory experience but in different ways. While VR provides complete immersion, AR shows computer-generated elements in the real-world environment. The added elements may include visuals, sounds, smells or haptic (i.e. touch-related) sensations, which provides the “augmented” experience. Until recently, AR was only applied for layering of 3D graphics over reality or displaying text notifications into human peripheral vision. So, how does pornography look in AR?

The Technology

The clip presented by ARporn.com shows porn star Susy Gala who explains the technological capabilities. To view this video, you need an Android smartphone, a compatible VR headset (for example, Google Cardboard) and an AR marker image, which may be either printed out or loaded on the screen of a tablet. The current demo is rendered into a flat file, but the producer is working on another clip with depth created by volumetric video.

The demo works on the basis of ARjs and WebGL Polyfill stereo rendering. The image from the phone camera serves as the scene background in mono. Here is the basic process:

  1. Using the AR marker, location for Susy Gala within the background image is determined;
  2. A stereo video file is rendered onto the AR marker;
  3. The green screen is removed from the video;
  4. You see a 3D object (Susy Gala) contained in a 2D scene, and viewpoints may be changed.

Most AR videos can be viewed on smartphones and tablets. Basically, any device with a forward-facing camera will do, and smartphone-based VR headsets like Google Cardboard or Samsung Gear VR are suitable.

Augmented reality is expected to facilitate breakthroughs in many industries, including adult entertainment. Today, porn studios are ready to implement new immersive technologies that were once thought to exist only in science fiction.
