Hajime no Ippo

Hajime no Ippo (Japanese, translated har. “First Step”), is a boxing-themed Japanese shōnen manga series written and illustrated by George Morikawa. The manga has been serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine and has been bundled into more than 123 tankōbon volumes to date. The story is about a high school student named Makunouchi Ippo, who started his career in boxing and overtime began to win many titles and defeat various opponents.

A 76-episode anime adaptation titled Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting! produced by Madhouse, Nippon Television, and VAP, directed by Satoshi Nishimura and aired on the Nippon Television Network channel from October 2000 to March 2002. A television film and OVA were also produced. On September 15, 2008, it was announced in Weekly Shōnen Magazine that the second season of Hajime no Ippo will begin airing on January 6, 2009. The second season is titled Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger and ends on June 30, 2009. At the end of the year 2003, the first season of the anime series was licensed in North America by Geneon, who released it under the name Fighting Spirit.

The Hajime no Ippo story begins when Ippo, a high school student, is often bullied by delinquents without being able to fight back. One day, when he was bullied by delinquents, Ippo was helped by a professional boxer named Takamura. He managed to get the delinquents to run away after removing all their buttons in a matter of moments. An amazed Ippo wants to become a boxer like himself.

The next day Ippo was brought under a tree and taught to use the jab. He had to pick up ten leaves that fell from the tree quickly. After succeeding, he then went to the Kamogawa gym to become a boxer as well. Ippo’s boxing career began.

Masaru Aoki
Aoki is a boxer who relies on infights and strange fighting styles such as his famous frog punching stance among boxing fans. He works part-time at the ramen shop Ippo et al. He has a girlfriend who is not very handsome. He once had a bitter experience with beautiful women, so he judged women, not from the outside. He used to be a delinquent with Kimura and his job was fighting.

Tatsuya Kimura
Kimura was a close friend of Takamura and Aoki before Ippo arrived. He is a boxer who relies on footwork and quick punches. He joined Aoki at the gym earlier to defeat Takamura. They are even addicted after winning the first fight. She works in her family’s flower shop.
